(A)       INFORMATION ON SEMINARS AND CONFERENCES HELD RECENTLY

(i)         National Seminar :

(a)        Two-Day National Seminar on “Revisiting Baba Banda Singh Bahadur and His Times” was organized by the Department of History, K.U. Kurukshetra on 2nd – 3rd April 2013. The Seminar was inaugurated by Sh. Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Hon’ble Chief Minister Haryana.                       Prof. J.S.Grewal an eminent Historian with International repute was the Key Note Speaker at this occasion. Valedictory Address was delivered’ by Prof Ishrat Alam, Secretary Indian Council of Historical Research, New Delhi. Prof. Indu Banga a renowned. Historian also shared her valuable views on this subject. Prof. Amarjeet singh, Chairman Department of History, K.U. Kurukshetra was the Director of the seminar.

            The Seminar has proved to be a mile stone in exploring the ideas and activities of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur which remain a significant chapter in the history of Punjab/Haryana. The Seminar successfully examined the 18th century Persian and 19th century British  Historiography and other significant aspects on the life and times of Banda Singh Bahadur. A galaxy of Scholars including  Prof. Azizzudin Hussain, Prof. Jigar Mahammad, Prof. Harish Sharma, Prof. Param Bakshish Singh, Prof. Veena Sachdeva, Prof. S.S.Sohal, Prof. Radha Sharma, Prof. Jaspal Kaur, Prof. Sharda Sharma and Prof. Sukhdyal Singh discussed the issue thread bare.

(b)        The Department of History organized a 2-day National Seminar on‘Mahatma Jyotiba Phule: Life, Works and Vision’ on 14-15 October, 2013.  Eminent historians and scholars with national/international repute like Prof. Nandu Ram, Prof. D.K. Verma and Prof. Shailendra Parasar delivered the inaugural address, key-note address and valedictory address at this national seminar.  A large number of scholars, teachers and research scholars from the different Universities attended this seminar and presented their research papers.  The proceedings of this national seminar were adequately reported in the media and this national seminar was a successful academic exercise of the Department.

(ii).       Refresher Course

A Refresher course on ‘Historiography on Agrarian Relations During The Course of Indian History’ was organized by Department of History and UGC Academic Staff College, K.U. Kurukshetra from 29th November 2012 to 19th December 2012.

The inaugural lecture of the course was delivered by Prof. Mridula Mukherjee an eminent Historian, Professor of History, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Various dimensions and issues related to the Theme/Sub-themes  of the course were taken up by 32 eminent scholars and historians such as Prof. Aditya Mukherjee, Prof. J.K.Sharma, Prof. Rajiv Lochan, Prof. S.S.Sohal, Prof. Jigar Mohammad, Prof. Joginder Singh, Prof. S.D. Gajrani, Prof. Nazar Singh, Prof. Jaspal Kaur, Prof. Inayat Zaidi, Prof. Sunita Zaidi, Prof. Dilbag Singh,  Prof. Jaiveer Dhankar and Prof. Sukhwant Singh. These historians primarily touched upon the issues of agrarian relations during different periods of Indian History and the role played by the peasantry in national movement during their deliberations. 

The Valedictory Address was delivered by Prof. K.C. Yadav and Prof. I.H. Siddiqui the eminent Historians of India. University and college teachers from the various states of Haryana, Gujarat, Bihar, Uttarakhand and Maharashtra were the participants and delegates of this Refresher Course. Prof. Amarjit Singh Chairman, Department of History K.U. Kurukshetra was the course coordinator.

PROPOSAL

            The Department is working on the proposal for the establishment of the Centre for South Asian Studies. A proposal to this effect has already been sent to the University Grants Commission, New Delhi.

NEW POST-GRADUATE TEACHING COURSE

            The Department has introduced a new Post-Graduate Teaching Course, i.e., M.A.-South Asian Studies w.e.f. the Session 2014-15. This M.A. Course in South Asian Studies proposes to coordinate academic studies, outreach programs teaching and research relating to Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bhutan. This Course may deal with the study about the diverse peoples, cultures, societies, religions, economy, history and politics of the South Asia. This Course may focus on the studies on different aspects of Colonialism, Nationalism, Post-Colonial Socio-Economic development, Government and Politics, Growth of the Democratic Institutions and Foreign Relations related to the South Asian Nations. Beside this the study of the emergence and growth of Regional Identities, Health and Medicine, Science and Technology, Agriculture and Animal Science and Environmental Studies related to the South Asian Nations will also be taken care in the syllabi of this M.A.Course.

INFORMATION ON ACHIEVEMENTS

1.Prof. Raghuvendra Tanwar co-authored a book entitled ‘Bansi Lal: Life And Times’ which was released by Hon’ble Governer of Haryana and Hon’ble Chief Minister, Haryana in January 2013.

2. Prof. Amarjit Singh presented a Research Paper in the Annual International Interdisciplinary Conference organized by the European Scientific Institute, Geneva, at the University of Azores, Portugal in April, 2013

3. All the Faculty members are regularly associated with various professional bodies like Indian History Congress, Punjab History Conference and Indian Historical Record Commission.

4.All the Faculty members are actively/regularly participating in various National Seminars and Conferences organized by different Institutions/Universities. 

 

(a) One Day Academic Programme to Commemorate the Birth Anniversary of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur on 13th Nov., 2014

One-Day Academic Programme to Commemorate the 344th Birth Anniversary of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur was organized by the Department of History, K.U. Kurukshetra on 13th November, 2014. Baba Jatinder Pal Singh JiSodhi, GaddiNashin, 10th Decendent of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur was the Chief Guest at the Programme which was presided over by the Lt. Gen.(Dr.) D.D.S. Sandhu, Vice-Chancellor, Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra. Prof. B.S.Dhillon, Director, Centre for Shri Guru Granth Sahib, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar an eminent Historian with International repute was the Distinguish Speaker at this program. Prof. Dilbag Singh, Centre for Historical Studies, J.N.U., New Delhi an eminent historian was the Guest of Honour at this Program. Prof. Amarjit Singh, Chairman Department of History, K.U. Kurukshetra was the Director of the Programme.

(b) Two-Day National Seminar on Land and the State : Revisiting Medieval and Colonial India – 3rd to 4th Dec.,2014.

The Department of History organized a 2-day National Seminar on ‘Land and The State : Revisiting Medieval and Colonial India ’on 3rd-4th December, 2014.  Prof. Mridula Mukherjee, Former Director, Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, New Delhi, eminent historians with International reputation delivered the Key-Note Address at this National Seminar. The Seminar was presided over by the Lt.Gen.(Dr.) D.D.S.Sandhu Vice-Chancellor, Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra. Prof. Aditya Mukherjee, Former Director, Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Advance Study, J.N.U., New Delhi was the Guest of Honour at this Seminar. Prof. Kapil Kumar, Former Secretary, I.C.H.R., New Delhi delivered the Valedictory Address and Prof. Parambakshish Singh, Former Registrar, Punjabi University, Patiala delivered the Presidential Address at the Valedictory Session.  Prof.Jigar Mohammad, Prof. Inayat Zaidi, Prof. Sunita Zaidi Prof. Dilbagh Singh, Prof. JaiveerDhankar, Prof.S.M. Azizzuddin Husain attended this National Seminar and Chaired the Session.  Outstanding and distinguished Scholars of different Universities of India attended this Seminar and presented their view points on the above said topic The proceedings of this National Seminar were widely reported in the reputed National Newspapers and Journals.  As per the reports of the print and electronic media and as per the observations of the Eminent Historians this National Seminar was a successful academic/research exercise on the study of history
