Seminars and Conference held recently:
A State level function was organized to celebrate the World Environment Day on 5thJune, 2007. The World Environment Day, 2008 was organized in the village Bhainimajra under the outreach programme in collaboration with the National Institute of Ecology, New Delhi for ecology education and to create environmental awareness in the in rural areas. Environmental awareness campaign was conducted on World Environment Day 2009 at Village Padla through skits, poems, quiz and interaction with students in local dialect. World Environment Day 2010, (5th June) was celebrated at Institute of Environmental Studies, KUK with lectures by Guest Faculty and presentations by students, Release of Newsletter and Tree Plantation. An Environmental Awareness Rally was organized in markets of University and NIT, Kurukshetra followed by presentation of students, group discussion and extempore quiz in the Institute to celebrate world Environmental Day, 2011.
World Wetland Day was organized on 2ndFebruary, 2008. Earth Hour was celebrated on 28thApril, 2009 by door-to-door campaigning. Ozone Day was organized on 16thSeptember, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 in the Institute.
One day Seminar on “Climate Change: Science and Society” was organized by the Institute on 7.12.09 in the Senate Hall of Bhagvatgita Sadan of Kurukshetra University on 7th December 2009, coinciding with “Copenhagen Summit.” Vice Chancellor, Lt. Gen. Dr. D.D.S. Sandhu (PVSM) was the Chief Guest and Prof. Brij Gopal, Ex- Professor, JNU and Visiting Professor, TERI, New Delhi was the Guest of Honor. The Key Note address was delivered by Prof. K. S. Rao of University of Delhi. The deemed dignitaries highlighted India’s stand on climate change, the science involved and the role of society in combating climate change. An awareness rally was held by the students of the Institute in the University campus with colorful posters and slogans to combat climate change. The highlight of the seminar was keeping the carbon footprint of the event very low by minimum use of resources and use of recycle paper.
International Forestry Day (21st March,2009) was celebrated at Village Sunheri Khalsa, Distt. Kurukshetra, awareness rally for conservation of water and tree plantations by involving local communities and children.
World Water Day (22nd March, 2009) was celebrated by organizing Awareness Rally in the University Campus and posters highlighting significance of water conservation were pasted all over the campus.
The Institute Director and students actively participated in the Environment Awareness programme of NIE, New Delhi on 4th May 2010 at village Sunheri Khalsa, Kurukshetra regarding Water treatment facility through constructed wetland set up in local pond
Earth Day (21 April), Environment Day (05 June) and Ozone day (16 September) are being celebrated every year on regular basis. On these occasions, the group and solo activities like competition on poster making, slogan, writing and presentation, documentary show for mass awareness, guest lectures, 3-D model designing, bulb painting, extempore declamation and Eco-quiz are being held. On Earth Day 2012, a guest lecture was delivered on “Environmental issues, concerns and strategies” by Prof. Ram Bhooj, National Programme Officer, UNESCO, New Delhi. Recently, on Earth Day 22nd April, 2013, a guest lecture on ‘Climate Change: Impact, Adaptation Strategies and Opportunities’was being delivered byDr. J.C. Dagar, Prof. Emeritus, CSSRI, Karnal. The first ever Alumni Meet of the Institute was organized on 22nd October 2011 in which about 30 alumni placed in various prestigious national/international companies and research organizations participated.
Information on Research Activities:
Presently ten Ph.D. students are engaged in research with Prof. Smita Chaudhry in the field of bioremediation, phytoremediation, impact assessment and management of industrial pollution, carbon sequestration, in-vitro biodiversity conservation, agro-ecology and impact of urbanization, micro-hydro power and climate change.
Information on Achievements:
Prof Smita Chaudhry was awarded the NIE Fellowship of the year 2009 at the National Seminar on Biodiversity, Ecosystem and Climate Change: The Challenge Ahead, organized by National Institute of Ecology, New Delhi at Lucknow from 4th-6th December 2010. Mrs Jyoti Kajal and Mrs Jyoti Panwar (Research Scholars) win the 2nd prize at regional level in poster presentation and Mrs Jyoti Kajal also win the 3rd prize at zonal level in poster presentation in Students Research Convention/ Student Anveshan, 2013.
Most of the students of M.Sc. and M.Tech. have got placements in prestigious organizations and institutes.
For completion of M.Sc. & M.Tech. degree from the IES, students have done summer training in various prestigious organizations, institutes, industries and ministries. In the fourth semester students have done project dissertations in the Institute as well as with our prestigious collaborations. M.Sc. and M.Tech. dissertation projects have been completed in the thrust areas of Bioremediation and Biodegradation, Ecological Restoration, in vitro Conservation, Environment Monitoring and Impact Assessment by RS & GIS, Environmental Auditing, Hazard Management, Energy Efficiency and Management, Renewable Energy and Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), Energy Auditing, Ecohomes, Designing of Sanitary Landfills, Clean Development for Climate Change Mitigation, Environmental Cost Accounting, Water Conservation techniques in Agriculture, Air Pollution Modelling, Efficiency Analysis of Solar Plants and Solid Waste Management.
In addition to summer training and dissertation, Seminars, Group Discussions, Case Studies, Field Work, Industrial Visits, Educational Tours and Simulation /Demonstration are part of the study programme.
