Information on Seminars, Conferences, etc., held recently:
(A) Seminars & Workshops:
1. National Seminar on ‘Relevance of Social, Political and Economical Ideals of Sanskrit Literature in Modern Times’ was organized on 29-31 January 2008.
2. The M a n u s c r i p t Resource Centre, working under the National Mission for M a n u s c r i p t s, Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts, Ministry of Culture, Govt of India, organized a National Workshop for 21 days on M a n u s c r i p t o l o g y and Paleography in collaboration with the Department during April-May, 2008.
3. National Seminar on ‘Śabda-Śakti : Indian Theories on Lingual Signification’, sponsored by the Dept of Education, Govt. of Haryana & Haryana Sanskrit Academy, Panchkula, was organized on 09 March 2010.
4. G. Bhattacharya Memorial Lectures-2012 and National Seminar on ‘Practice of Lokasangraha and Social Transformation : A Contemporary Critique on Gita, Buddha & Gandhi’ were organized on 23-25 January, 2013.
5. National Workshop on ‘Preservative Conservation of M a n u s c r i p t s’ was organized from 26 Feb. to 02 March, 2013 in collaboration with M a n u s c r i p t Resource Centre, KUK.
6. International Seminar on ‘Tantra : An Exploration of the Esoteric Knowledge Traditions in M a n u s c r i p t s and Exposition of the Evolution and Cross-Currents of Ideas’, sponsored by National M a n u s c r i p t s Mission, Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India, New Delhi, was organized on 28-31 March, 2013.
7. A week-long National Workshop was organized on “Study A Text with a Master I : Vedānta Chatuhusutri” in collaboration with G. Bhattacharya Sanskrit Shodha Parishad of the Department and Vedanta Darshan Samiti, Karnal on July 09-15, 2013. Sri Sri Paramananda Bharathi from the Sringeri Shankar Math, Bangalore was the preceptor in the workshop.
8. A week-long National Seminar on “Study A Text with Master II : In-depth Study of the Pratyabhijnahrdayam”, co-sponsored by the Ishwar Ashwar Trust, Srinagar, Kashmir, was organized by G. Bhattacharya Sanskrit Shodha Parishad of the Department on 24-30 July 2013 where Prof. D.B. Sain Sharma from the R.K. Mission Institute of culture, Kolkata was the chief exponent.
9. ‘Professor G. Bhattacharya Memorial Lectures-2013’ on “Navyanyaya Perspective on Verbal Understanding and Negation” and National Seminar on “Navyanyaya Philosophy of Language and Logic” were organized on 25-26 February, 2014.

1. Prof. Maan Singh (Roorki, Uttarakhand), former Chairman of this Dept delivered an extension lecture on “Kalidasa and Veda” on 03 Dec., 2008.
2. Prof. Pradyot K. Mukhopadhyaya, National Fellow, ICPR, New Delhi delivered G. Bhattacharya Memorial lectures on “Changing Self-Perception”, “Sanskrit & Regional Languages”, “Pramana : A Scandal of Indian Philosophy”, “Bhartrihari & Philosophy of Language” and “Is Shabda a source of knowledge” on 27-28 March, 2009.
3. Prof. R.K. Pandeya, Head, Dept of Research & Publication, Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeeth, New Delhi delivered a lecture on “Shodha Ke Vividha Ayama” on 19 Nov., 2009.
4. Prof. Devendra Mishra,formerHead, Dept of Sanskrit, University of Delhi delivered a lecture on “Jyotishashastra as a Science” on 21 Nov., 2009.
5. Prof. Srinivasa Rao, National Fellow, ICPR, New Delhi delivered four lectures on “Is a contemporary universalized Advaitic view of life needed ?” on 17-18 Sept, 2010 in a series of G. Bhattacharya Memorial lectures, sponsored by the Indian Council of Philosophical Research, New Delhi.
6. Prof. Hans T. Bakker, Institute if Indian Studies, University of Groningen, the Netherland delivered an extension lecture on “The Ins c r i p tion in the Kevala-Nrasimha Temple on the Ramagiri : A Re-interpretation” on 16 Nov., 2010.
7. Prof. Jan E.M. Houben, Paris (France), Prof. (Mrs) Saraju Rath Houben, Netherlands and Prof. J.L. Brockington, University of Edinburgh (Scotland) delivered lectureson “Linguistics and Philosophy in Vedas and Sanskrit Grammar,” “Philosophy of Chomsky and Panini,” and “Relationship between the Ramayana and the Mahabharata” respectively on 12-13 Jan., 2012 under G. Bhattacharya Memorial lectures-2011.
8. Prof. Vinod Shankar, former Chairman, Dept of Philosophy, KUK delivered a lecture on “Science and Spirituality” on 02.07.2012.

Information on Achievement:
1. The Department organized the 27th session of the All-India Oriental Conference on December 26-28, 1974 and 28 National / International Seminars / Workshops up to Feb., 2014.
2. The Department organized six U.G.C. sponsored Refresher Courses in Sanskrit during the period w.e.f.1991 to 2002 and one Refresher Course in Indian Languages (Sanskrit, Hindi & Punjabi) w.e.f. 06-06-2014 to 26-06-2014.
3. Dr Satyavrat Shastri was the first teacher appointed at Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra who joined the Department in 1957. Subsequently, he joined Sanskrit Department, University of Delhi where he worked as Professor & Head of the Dept for many years. He also worked as Vice-Chancellor of Shri Jagannath Sanskrit University, Puri (Orissa) and Visiting Professor at many Universities of different countries. He is currently an Honorary Professor at the Special Centre for Sanskrit Studies, Jawahar Lal Nehru University, New Delhi. Prof. Shastri is a world renowned Sanskrit scholar and poet and has authored a number of books and research papers on topics pertaining to Sanskrit Grammar, Literature, Poetics, etc. He has to his credit three Mahakavyas of about a thousand stanzas each, three Khandakavyas, one Prabandhakavya and one Patrakavya. He has been felicitated with many national and international honors and awards. He was conferred on ‘Padma Shri’ by the President of India in 1999. He was conferred on the prestigious ‘Jnanpith Award’, instituted by the Bharatiya Jnanpith, New Delhi, for the year 2008 for his contributions to the enrichment of the language by his disciple and Princess of Thailand Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on August 19, 2009.Prof. Shastri was elected as the General President for the 45th Session of the All-India Oriental Conference held at Tirupati (A.P.) in 2010.
4. Prof. Gopikamohan Bhattacharya,a world renowned scholar in the field of Indian Philosophy, particularly Neo Logic (Navya Nyaya), andformer Professor & Head of the Dept,worked as Visiting Professor in Vienna University (Austria)in 1980-1981 and 1985-1986. As Local Secretary he organized the 27th session of the All-India Oriental Conferenceat Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra in 1974 (December 26-28) very smoothly and successfully.
5. Four former teachers of the Department, namely, the late Pt. Sthanu Datt Sharma, Prof. Maan Singh, Prof. D.B. Sen Sharma and Prof. D.C. Jain have been awarded the ‘Certificate of Honour’ by the Hon’ble President of India.
6. Prof. Amar Singh, former Chairman of the Dept and Dean, Faculty of Indic Studies, worked as Dean of Colleges, Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra for about 9 years since 1996. He had been a Member of the Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi for five years.
7. Prof. Bhim Singh was awarded the prestigious ‘Mahakavi Banabhatta Puraskar’ (for the year 2006)by the Haryana Sanskrit Academy, Panchkula in a special function held at Chandigarh on dated 22-3-2007.
8. Prof. R.P. Mishra was awarded (i) ‘Sayana Puraskara’ by Uttar Pradesh Sanskrit Sansthanam, Lucknow for the year 2009-2010; (ii) ‘Veda Raksha Sammana’ by Sri Dharma Jnanopadesha, Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya, Allahabad in January, 2011; and (iii) ‘Sanskrit Mahamahopadhyaya’ by Hindi Sahitya Sammelana, Prayag, Allahabad on 27th May, 2011.
Dr S.M. Mishra, Associate Professor in the Dept, was invited as a Visiting Resource Person to the Mahatma Gandhi Institute in Mauritius in July-August, 2006 and as Visiting Fellow to the same Institute during 2007. He was invited as Visiting Fellow by the Centre for Buddhist Studies, University of North Bengal, Darjeeling, during March, 2007 and by the Dept of Philosophy of the same university in 2014. He also visited the same as External Examiner in June, 2009 and was invited to deliver a lecture on Indian Logic at the D.A.V. College at Port Louis. He has been working as Project Coordinator of a Central Govt Project on survey and documentation of m a n u s c r i p t s in Haryana sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Govt of India, through National M a n u s c r i p t Mission, Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, New Delhi. He was invited to join the delegation of scholars to the 14th World Sanskrit Conference organized by International Association of Sanskrit Studies (IASS) at Kyoto University, Kyoto (Japan) on Sept. 1-5, 2009 wherein he participated in the Shastracharcha Parishad and the Sanskrit Kavi Samavaya. He received an award from the Clean India Green India, Kurukshetra for his work for Sanskrit and M a n u s c r i p t s in Haryana. He was also offered the title of ‘Scholar of Distinction’ by the Christ College Association, Odisha and ‘Ch. Dharmaveer Smriti Samman’ at Karnal.
