4. Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Chair:
A Chair has been established in the Department of History after the name Mahatma Jyotiba Phule (1827-1890), the great social reformer and the father of Indian Social Revolution. The Chair was established by the University in the Department of History on 12 May 2010 as a result of the positive initiative taken by the then Chief Minister of Haryana himself in this regard. The Chair was established for the purpose to carry out concrete research work on Mahatma Jotirao Govindrao Puble. Mahatma Phule was originally from Maharashtra, who throughout his life fought to attain equal rights for the lower classes and women. The Chair reflects the University’s commitment to the cause and ideology of social justice as propounded by our great social reformers like Mahatma Phule.
The In-Charge of the Chair is Dr. S.K. Chahal, Professor & Chairman, Department of History, K.U. Kurukshetra. The University has provided a budget for running all the Chairs established in the different University Teaching Departments. There is, however, no separate budgetary allocation for this Chair.
The Chair has encouraged the Ph.D. and M.Phil. scholars to yield research on the different aspects on the studies of Mahatma Jotirao Govindrao Phule under the supervision of its In-Charge. The Chair has organized National Seminars, Conferences and Extension Lectures at regular intervals on the different themes/aspects related to the study of Mahatma Phule.In addition, the Chair has organized every year Mahatma Phule Jayanti and Mahatma Phule Nirvana Day Programmes on 11th April and 28th November respectively on regular basis.
It is noted that during 2019-21, Dr. S.K. Chahal, Professor-in-Charge of Chair, joined as a Fellow the prestigious Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla where he wrote a lengthy research monograph on the project entitled Hindu Social Reform: The Framework of Jotirao Phule. His monograph was published by Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla in 2022 which has been considered as a unique research contribution in the field of Mahatma Phule Studies in the academic world.
5. Research Forum:
The Research Forum was established in the Department during the middle of 1960s by Professor V.N. Datta, At the Research Forum, eminent historians and scholars have been invited at regular intervals to deliver distinguish talks/extension lectures in the Department. During the last 10 years, the Research Forum has organized about 30 Invited Lectures of the eminent historians such as, Professor S.M.
