Spatiality and Dynamics of Socio Economic Development in Haryana: Analysis and Consequences
Annual Fieldwork:
The Department of Geography also undertakes socio-economic household survey, (involving the whole class of 3rd Semester) of one village in Haryana or nearby state. Two teachers of the Department accompany students and stay in village for 8 days and about 10 detailed reports of respective villages are prepared depicting socio-economic, demographic, and other details. In the last two decades following villages have been studied in detail.

INFORMATION ON ACHIEVEMENTS
Achievement Area:
The department has excelled in research in the field of Agricultural Geography, Geomorphology, Urban Geography., and Issues of well-being. Beside this, currently the department is focusing on the use of research techniques and tools such as remote sensing, GIS and quantitative and qualitative analysis of physical and cultural environment.
Achievement Details:
The department is a leading academic center of geographical studies in Northern India. It has specialized in the field of agricultural geography. A large number of research studies in the department have focused agricultural aspects and problems in spatial context. Urbanization, settlements and landforms are other issues of interest in the department. Equipped with lab facilities and GIS software the research activities in the department have diversified recently. This includes the fields such as gender, environmental issues, watershed management, health and nutrition, urban planning and rural development.
Collaboration with Other Universities:
The Department of Geography has entered into Inter University Consortium on Geo-Spatial Information Systems (IUCGIS).
The MoU was signed by the vice-chancellors of 7 partner universities namely Jawaharlal Nehru University, Guru Nanak Dev University, Kurukshetra University, Pandit Deendyal Petroleum University, Gandhinagar, and University of Kashmir, University of Pune, Goa, Hyderabad and Madras at the JNU campus in New Delhi on Sept. 12, 2013. The MoU on IUCGIS aims tol strengthen the GIS programme, expertise, capacity building and infrastructure in Haryana. The research in the area will help the teachers and students to explore the advanced field of GIS which is considered a very important tool in modern day geophysical research. The consortium on GIS will provide opportunity to the partner universities to make coordinated efforts for developing the GIS based teaching, research and solutions to various problems of governance, land and water conservation, land use and land acquisition, crop yield predictions, urban and infrastructure planning, management of natural resources, monitoring and real time mapping of disasters and natural hazards.
IUCGIS envisages exchange of faculty and research scholars, information, geo-data base, research material and output among the universities for widening the arena of applications of the geo-informatics and remote sensing for the betterment of the society. It will also encourage the scholars to make concerted efforts for undertaking cutting-edge research aimed at an effective use of the GIS for developing decision support systems for wider applications and societal development. The consortium aims at raising the financial resources, in addition to the resources of partner universities, from various national and international funding agencies as well as other donor foundations.
Prof MS Jaglan, of the Department of Geography, has been appointed as focal person to co-ordinate the activities carried out under the aegis of the consortium at Kurukshetra University campus.
